"Alle Ding sind Gift und nichts ohn Gift; allein die Dosis macht, das ein Ding kein Gift ist." (Paracelsus, 1493-1541)
All things are poison and nothing is without poison, only the dose makes a thing be poison.
Dr. Simon Lowe

Hi! I’m Dr. Simon Lowe, a science writer and co-director of It’s All in the Dose. I specialise in and medical communications and PKPD modelling. My primary focus is helping pharmacometricians translate their complex data, models, and research into high-quality scientific papers that are clear, accurate, and ready for publication in leading journals. This includes every step of the process—from structuring manuscripts to navigating journal submission requirements.
Beyond publishing support, I also provide expertise in creating a wide range of medical communications deliverables, such as regulatory reports, marketing content, and educational materials. With over a decade of writing experience and collaborations with industry leaders like MMV and LYO-X AG, I ensure that every project I take on is tailored to meet the unique needs of both scientific and commercial audiences.
Former & Current Clients

My journey into pharmacometrics was an unconventional one, and began during my time as a journalist intern at Novartis Pharma AG, where I was introduced to the intricacies of Model-Informed Drug Development (MIDD). Working closely with modellers there, I gained first-hand insight into how mathematical models and simulations shape decision-making in drug development, sparking a fascination that would thereafter define my career.
While I initially approached medical and scientific writing from a background in writing and journalism more broadly, I quickly honed my expertise in pharmacometrics through hands-on training under the guidance of my father, who happened to be Executive Director of Pharmacometrics at Novartis at the time, Dr. Phil Lowe. This training, combined with regular on the job experience, equipped me with a deep understanding of pharmacokinetics (PK), pharmacodynamics (PD), and the entire drug development process, from preclinical safety testing to Phase 3 clinical trials. Dad later retired, and founded It’s all in the Dose Ltd as a way to stay involved in the PKPD world, by which time I was finishing up my PhD as well, and got involved as a scientific writer.
Years later, with Dad wanting to actually retire now thank you very much, I have largely taken over It’s all in the Dose, and now work as a writing and publishing consultant for pharmacometric and other biotech clients, specialising in transforming complex data and simulation results into manuscripts. My work also supports pharmaceutical clients in advancing research, submitting journal articles, and improving patient outcomes. Additionally, I assist in the creation of regulatory reports, marketing deliverables, conference minutes and transcripts as well as presentations, providing a comprehensive suite of medical communications services tailored to the unique needs of the industry.
University of Birmingham — PhD, Philosophy of Language, 2019
My thesis, ‘Expressive Fictionalism,’ applied empirical research methods from neurology and cognitive psychology to test theories in meta-ethics and theoretical semantics. This developed my expertise in analytical thinking, scientific communication, and audience psychology—skills I’ve applied directly in scientific writing and pharmacometrics.
University of Aberdeen — M.A., English and Philosophy (2.1.), 2012
This program combined linguistic precision with analytical thinking, equipping me with a deep understanding of language, audience engagement, and strategic communication—critical tools for crafting complex medical and scientific content.
International School Basel — I.B., 2008
Subjects: English, Psychology, Biology, Chemistry, Maths, History, Geography, German
*Disclaimer: It’s true that my degrees aren’t technically in the life sciences. However, scientific writing is, by definition, a multidisciplinary field. Scientists who can’t write make poor science writers, and writers who can’t understand science face the same problem. I’ve simply approached it from the opposite direction, and as a result my published work and the calibre of my clients speak for themselves.
