About Me: The Story Behind the Dose

The Logic of Science. The Art of the Narrative.

Most medical writers follow a linear path from a lab bench to a keyboard. My journey was different, it was driven by a fascination with how we communicate the “why” behind the “math(s)”.

As a PhD in the Philosophy of Language, I don’t just report data; I analyse the architecture of the argument. I treat every scientific manuscript, regulatory report, and commercial bid as a logical proof that must be both technically unassailable and narratively persuasive.

The Novartis Internship: A Front-Row Seat to MIDD

My entry into the pharmaceutical world began unexpectedly as a journalism intern at Novartis Pharma AGIt was there that I was first introduced to the intricacies of Model-Informed Drug Development (MIDD).

Watching modellers navigate the high-stakes decisions of drug development through mathematical simulations sparked a realisation: The science is only as powerful as the clarity with which it is communicated. I saw firsthand how complex data could either drive a project forward or stall it due to a lack of strategic narrative clarity.

An Unconventional Apprenticeship

While I was refining my analytical skills during my doctoral research at the University of Birmingham, I was simultaneously undergoing a different kind of training. I had the unique privilege of being mentored by one of the industry’s leading minds in pharmacometrics: my father, Dr. Phil Lowe, former Executive Director of Pharmacometrics at Novartis.

Under his guidance, I didn’t just learn about science writing; I learned the language of Pharmacokinetics (PK) and Pharmacodynamics (PD). This hands-on training equipped me with a deep understanding of:

  • Differential Calculus & Compartmental Models: Understanding the mathematical engine of drug action.

  • The Drug Development Lifecycle: From preclinical safety testing to the rigours of Phase 3 clinical trials.

  • Regulatory Strategy: Learning how PKPD models are used to drive decision-making and secure regulatory approval.

It’s all in the Dose: Taking the Torch

When Dad founded It’s all in the Dose Ltd in 2018, it was a way to keep his expertise active in the PKPD world. I joined as a co-director and scientific writer, applying my PhD research in audience psychology and narrative framing to the world of high-stakes science.

Today, as I have taken the lead at the consultancy, I serve as a Strategic Writing & Publishing Consultant for global pharmaceutical and biotech clients. My mission is to ensure that complex data is never “lost in translation.”

Why a Philosopher in the Lab?

It is a common misconception that science writing requires a life science degree. In reality, it is a multidisciplinary field.

  • Analytical Rigour: My thesis, Expressive Fictionalism, utilised empirical research from neurology and cognitive psychology to test theories in theoretical semantics.
  • Persuasive Precision: I apply this same level of rigour to B2B bids, regulatory reports, and peer-reviewed journals.

  • The Result: My published work in top-tier journals like CPT: Pharmacometrics & Systems Pharmacology and my partnerships with industry leaders like Roche, Eisai, and MMV speak for themselves.

I have merely approached science from the opposite direction, and as a result, I offer a level of linguistic precision and strategic clarity that is rare in the industry.

Beyond the Screen

Based in the West Midlands, I work with remote teams worldwide, from U.S. health-tech startups to European biotech firms. However, if your project requires a face-to-face deep dive, I am always within driving range (or a flight away) for those critical strategy meetings.
